In many families, dogs become full members of them and perform not only the role of a protector and guard, but also a friend, a close creature. In addition, it has been scientifically proven that these animals are also capable of healing, even from serious ailments.

The method of dog therapy, the so-called canistherapy, first appeared abroad, but in Russia its popularity is gaining momentum. In many cities, specialized clinics have already appeared, where, along with drug treatment, they conduct healing sessions by communicating with dogs.

Canistherapy sessions are held with dogs that have undergone specialized training. In such classes, sick people communicate with animals, together they perform certain exercises aimed at reducing the manifestation of symptoms of the disease, getting rid of a stressful condition that arose during prolonged treatment or as a result of complications.

In dog therapy, representatives of various breeds are used, which show themselves as sociable and patient companions. Even a mongrel dog who has successfully mastered the lessons of healing is suitable for the session. In clinics of this direction, you can find a mongrel doctor, and a "doctor" with an excellent pedigree, a representative of the family of Labradors, retrievers, lapdogs or poodles. That is, the breed and size of the animal are not decisive, only their friendliness and desire to communicate with a person are important.

What diseases are treated with dog therapy

Dog therapy is widely used in the treatment and adaptation of children with autism and Down syndrome, as an additional treatment for various nervous disorders, accompanied by confusion and impaired coordination during movement.

These animals can be excellent therapists for diseases of the cardiovascular system, respiratory system and genitourinary system. Various joint problems such as rheumatism, gout or sciatica can also be treated with canistherapy.

Some breeds have their own medical specialization. Small dogs such as Pinschers can help relieve coordination problems and motor impairments, and Shepherd dogs can help them learn to walk again after a spinal injury or stroke. In addition, large dogs can serve as a kind of pacemaker, as they have a high alpha-rhythm of the heart muscle.
