Bloodworms are the larvae of the dergun mosquito with a length of 0.5 to 1.5 cm. Due to the large amount of hemoglobin dissolved in it, it has a red color. It lives in stagnant waters and is one of the most useful food for many species of aquarium fish.

Step 1
Before feeding the fish with fresh bloodworms, it must be thoroughly rinsed and sorted out. This is done in order to sort out the living larvae from the dead. It is not recommended to feed the fish last.
Step 2
Place it in a sieve in a bowl of water. There should be enough water so that it barely touches the cells, but not more. Live bloodworms will begin to crawl out, and dead larvae will remain at the bottom.
Step 3
Sort out live larvae. The largest of them will be used as food for goldfish, telescopes, veil-tails and other viviparous and predators. Feed all other fish with small bloodworms.
Step 4
Large larvae can also be used to feed small fish. But in this case, they must be cut. Place the bloodworms on a glass board and chop finely with a sharp knife or razor blade.
Step 5
Toss the larvae in small portions so that the fish can catch them before sinking to the bottom of the aquarium. Otherwise, the food will bury in the sand, and the fish will not get to it. You can also roll the feed into lumps.
Step 6
Make a special feeder. A cork or a piece of pine bark is perfect for this. Cut the middle out of it, put the bloodworms there and make small holes at the bottom so that live larvae can crawl out through them. Such a feeder will be very convenient for fish.
Step 7
Prepare bloodworms for future use. Live larvae can be placed in the freezer or dried in the oven. Frozen bloodworms must be thawed to room temperature or rinsed with hot water before feeding. And dry larvae can be immediately poured into the aquarium or steamed in warm water.
Step 8
Fresh live bloodworms can be refrigerated for up to three weeks. To do this, wrap it in a thin layer in two natural fiber cloths. The first one should be dry, and the second, the outer one, should be slightly damp. Before laying out the bloodworm on a rag, fold it into two layers.
