Scaletooth belongs to insectivorous mammals. The animal is represented by two species: Cuban and Haitian cracked teeth. The length of the body of the animal is about 30 cm, the length of the tail is 17-25 cm. The gag has an elongated muzzle, similar to a proboscis. The color of the body of the animal is brown with a reddish tint, representatives of black color are also found. The weight of the slotted tooth is about 1 kg. The limbs have five toes with claws. There are 40 sharp teeth in the mouth.

Scaletooths are poisonous animals, their venom resembles that of a snake. These animals often die from their own poison when bitten by congeners.

Crackles live in thickets and mountain forests in Cuba and Haiti, hence the name of the genus. They spend the day in burrows, and at night they go out in search of food. These animals love to dig in the ground, using their paws and muzzle for this. Their food includes small lizards, carrion, fruits. Scaletooth can attack domestic birds, and also eats invertebrates.

It is quite difficult to keep the snake tooth in captivity - they can show aggression and attack a person.

Crackles live up to five years. The offspring are brought once or twice a year, in a litter of 1 to 3 cubs, moreover, a new litter often appears when the previous one is still living with the mother.

The enemies of the cracked teeth are mongooses, dogs, rats. These animals do not know how to escape from danger. Due to the small number, slow reproduction and dangers, the crack-toothed teeth have practically died out and therefore they were included in the Red Book.
